Powerhouse Vocal Ensembles Prove No Instruments, No Problem

They have percussion without drums. They have rhythm without a bass. The only instruments on stage are the fourteen voices of Brigham Young University’s nationally renowned a cappella groups Noteworthy and Vocal Point. Making their Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts debut on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m., this eagerly anticipated family-friendly show promises a thrilling night of awe-inspiring vocal performances.

Noteworthy and Vocal Point take the songs you are familiar with, revamp them and deliver a new rendition, complete with all the complex instrumentation done entirely with their voices. Both groups seamlessly blend harmony, humor, and astounding vocal percussion into an electrifying showcase that cover it all: rock, pop, country, jazz, R&B and gospel genres. Their extensive vocal range delivers crowd-pleasing performances with songs including “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Amazing Grace” and a medley from the “Wicked” soundtrack, to name a few. 

In 2007, Noteworthy was crowned champion of the prestigious International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), becoming the second all-female ensemble to win the competition in more than 25 years. Noteworthy has since released 8 albums, become a YouTube sensation with over 120 million views and counting, and appeared on NBC’s hit show “The Sing-Off.”  “Well, that’s about the most professional group at the collegiate level anywhere,” says Deke Sharon, founder of the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA) and vocal producer of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.”

Vocal Point is BYU’s seven-man ensemble and has earned acclaim the world over, including being identified as one of “greatest college a cappella groups of all time.” In 2006, the group took home the title of ICCA, and the following year were voted the nation’s favorite male collegiate a cappella group by CASA.
