Let’s Get Retro with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Retro swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (BBVD) returns to the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in Wickenburg on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. This eagerly anticipated show promises a rollicking night of horn-infused, high-energy music.
Celebrating over 30 years on the music scene, the band helped launch the new swing era in the 1990′s. BBVD’s originals rocketed the group to national recognition when “You & Me and the Bottle Makes Three (Tonight)” and “Go Daddy-O” were featured in the 1996 indie film “Swingers,” which launched the careers of then unknown actors Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. Then the band hit pop music superstardom with their appearance in front of millions during the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXIII.
BBVD’s original core line-up includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger) alongside new comers Alex Henderson (trombone) and Mitch Cooper (trumpet).
The band’s efforts to promote and revitalize swing music have taken shape as much more than a simple tribute. Fusing the classic American sounds of jazz, swing, Dixieland and Big Band, the group’s catalog introduces the genre to a younger generation while remaining respectful of the music’s rich legacy.
Playing over 150 concerts each year, the dynamic nine-piece ensemble continues the party by transporting audiences on a rambunctious roller coaster ride to yesteryear filled with big horns, wild jungle-jazz rhythms and zoot suits.

“Made in Wickenburg” Residency Welcomes Vivid Stage
The Webb Center welcomes New Jersey-based theater company Vivid Stage to participate in their first “Made in Wickenburg” artist residency Oct. 27 – Nov. 10, 2024. The celebrated artist-in-residence program features free “Behind the Scenes” events, allowing the public an insider look as the company creates a new performance piece, tentatively titled “Arizona Project,” on the Webb Center stage.
While one of the resident acting company’s members, Harry Patrick Christian (aka Camp Imagination’s Director Mr. Harry) has been visiting our community for 17 years, this will be a new experience for the other nine participants. Among the company members are playwright Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich, play director Betsy True and Vivid Stage’s Producing Artistic Director Laura Ekstrand.
Celebrating 30 years of innovative and engaging performances, Vivid Stage’s professional actors and production team curate a year-round schedule of events that include plays, improv comedy, new play readings, and a summer youth program at their home theater in Summit, New Jersey.
During the two-week “Made in Wickenburg” residency, the company will offer two, free “Behind the Scenes” open rehearsals. Staff will be at the Webb Center on Wednesday, Oct. 30 and Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 2 – 5 p.m. to welcome the general public into the auditorium. These events are an Open House for all ages with a casual come-and-go pace. Those in attendance can expect an exclusive view into the creative process as the award-winning theater troupe creates a new family-friendly piece crafted from the stories and experimentation of the ensemble on stage.
In conclusion of their residency, Vivid Stage will present a public performance on Saturday, Nov. 9. The evening will consist of a full company reading of a play they have previously produced followed by the work-in-progress “Arizona Project.” After the 70-minute performance, audience members are invited to stay for a 20 minute “Post Show Talk Back” with the actors and creative team. Audience members are encouraged to offer feedback as the play continues to be developed and polished prior to its official world premiere on Jan. 28 at the Oakes Center.
Funded with grant support from the RH Johnson Foundation, the “Made in Wickenburg” residency hosts artistic companies providing for production costs, artist stipends, as well as lodging and meals at the historic Flying E Guest Ranch.

Upgraded Advertising Opportunities at the Webb Center
The Webb Center has recently updated its digital video wall located in the Lynne & John Boyer Atrium. With financial support from the Wellik Foundation and RH Johnson Foundation, a new 16’ x 10’ LED video wall matrix with upgraded 26,000 dpi resolution was installed over the summer by Phoenix-based audio-visual company, The Ark.
“The video wall offers local merchants an exciting opportunity to share their products and raise brand awareness with Webb Center audiences,” shared Development and Advertising Manager Janet Glueckert-Lang. “It also serves as a great method for thanking show sponsors and promoting upcoming concerts, among other dynamic functions.”
During the Webb Center’s upcoming 2024-2025 season, an estimated 14,000 audience members will attend events; 58% of whom travel from outside of Wickenburg.
Local businesses can choose to advertise with a still slide or a 15 – 30 second video displayed during performances from November 2024 through March 2025. Digital advertising is versatile; allowing merchants to update their ads each month. This flexibility offers business owners an opportunity to feature monthly specials or other incentives for patrons to visit their location.
Advertising prices, starting at $50 per month, have remained at the same affordable level since the program began 6 years ago. “We want the ads to reflect the diverse services located in Wickenburg from independently owned clothing shops and new restaurants to landmark tourist attractions and national hotels, so we intentionally keep the advertising costs low,” explained Glueckert-Lang.
November’s ad reservation deadline is Friday, Nov. 1 just prior to the opening performance by New Jersey-based theater company Vivid Stage. Ad spaces for December through March may be reserved at any time and will be pro-rated. Assistance with ad designs and payment plans are available.

The Webb Center Receives a Cox Charities Grant
The Webb Center is pleased to have been selected to receive a $5,000 donation from Cox Charities. This marks the 28th year that Cox employees, through Cox Charities, have raised funds to help the communities in which they live and work. Since 1996, Cox Arizona employees have raised over $10.5 million in grants for local Arizona nonprofits.
This gift is part of $698,500 in statewide donations given to 125 local nonprofits this year, thanks to the generosity of 3,100 Cox employees in Arizona. The donation will help support the Webb Center’s “Arts for Kids” programs, including Camp Imagination.

On Nov. 9 New Jersey-based theater company Vivid Stage presents the “Arizona Project,” a family-friendly play developed during their “Made in Wickenburg” residency. The show will feature beloved Camp Imagination Director Harry Patrick Christian aka “Mr. Harry.” On Nov. 20, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy returns to the Webb Center playing their uptempo brand of swing music. Later that month on Nov. 23, see country singer Craig Campbell perform hits like “Outskirts of Heaven,” “Fish” and “Keep Them Kisses Comin’.”
December brings country and holiday cheer to Wickenburg. On Dec. 5, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro will dazzle audiences with his “Holidays in Hawai’i” show. On Dec. 9, Jazz at Lincoln Center plays Big Band holiday hits. Rising country star and Grand Ole Opry regular Tony Jackson makes his Webb Center debut singing original music as well as updated versions of popular songs like Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” on Dec. 17. “Celebrate the Holydays” with Sweet Honey in the Rock’s soulful a cappella harmonies on Dec. 20 as they sing inspirational songs of the season influenced by their foundations of world music, gospel, and folk roots.
January celebrates iconic music. Neil Berg’s “The 60’s: Peace, Love and Rock & Roll” lights up the stage on Jan. 3 & 5 showcasing the songs of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, and many more chart-toppers of the decade. Live from Laurel Canyon explores the catalogs of legendary singer-songwriters John Lennon and Harry Nilsson on Jan. 17. Returning by popular demand, jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli presents music from Broadway’s stages to Hollywood’s silver screens on Jan. 21. Following on Jan. 25, join Brigham Young University’s Noteworthy & Vocal Point award-winning a cappella ensembles for a night of pop, rock, and jazz.
February serves up a feast for the senses. Jesse Cook and his energetic band return with their unique blend of contemporary Latin guitar and world beats on Feb. 1. Enjoy a three course meal on stage and intimate concert featuring Davina and the Vagabonds during the “Art in Motion” Gala Feb. 8. Little Texas entertains fans with their country rock anthems during Wickenburg’s 76th annual “Gold Rush Days” Feb. 14 & 15. Experience the lively movements, colorful costumes, and bright music of Mexican culture with Ballet Folklórico de México on Feb. 20. Get swept away by a theatrical telling of “The Simon and Garfunkel Story” including their biggest folk hits Feb. 25. On Feb. 28 see the world of animation come to life as The Queen’s Cartoonists synchronize live music with classic cartoons; leading the audience on a journey of virtuosic musicianship, multi-instrumental mayhem, and comedy.
March offers a diverse array of events. Kicking off the busy month is a free concert by the US Air Force concert band on March 2. Following on the 4th, is National Geographic Live photographer David McLain sharing stories and research on the secrets to living a longer, fulfilling life. Classic Albums Live returns to perform Queen’s triple-platinum “A Night at the Opera” album on March 8; note for note, cut for cut. On March 11 The Swingles, Britain’s preeminent a cappella ensemble, feature an ever-growing repertoire of jazz, folk, pop and classical music.
The annual “Guys Who Grill” fundraiser sizzles on March 15 at the Wickenburg Community Center. This beloved fundraiser brings 14 grilling teams from across Arizona to raise money for Camp Imagination. It includes live music, delectable food, and family-friendly fun.
On March 19, experience an electrifying evening of entertainment when The Barricade Boys blend hits from your favorite musicals with the greatest pop, rock and swing numbers. Webb Center Announces New CEO
Recently the Webb Center’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to name Andy Halseth as the incoming Chief Executive Officer of the organization. Currently serving as the theatre’s Director of Operations, Halseth will transition to Executive Director in the interim and then assume the role of CEO in July 2024.
The Webb Center conducted an extensive nationwide search with the assistance of Los Angeles-based search firm Arts Consulting Group. Over 60 applicants submitted letters of interest, resumes, and personality sketches among other requirements. Of those, 14 were interviewed and the top candidates were reduced to 9. The Board of Directors conducted Zoom interviews and selected 3 for site visits.
“After meeting the 3 finalists in person, the search committee decided that none of them were the right fit for our organization,” stated Committee Chair and Board President Jerry Riggins. “So we went back to ACG to review new applications that had been submitted.”
Among those new applicants was the Director of Operations since January 2024, Andy Halseth. After participating in the same rigorous interview process, Halseth was approved by unanimous vote. “Andy ended up being our person. [He] has the verve of the organization. He handles himself around artists and staff that is next level. He is the only [candidate] that we felt comfortably understood the heart and soul to lead Camp Imagination,” described Riggins.
Moving to Wickenburg from the Los Angeles area in the summer of 2022, Halseth has an extensive background in the film industry including computer-generated imagery (CGI) and visual effects (VFX). Through his professional experiences, Halseth gained key project management, budgeting, communication, motivation, negotiation, and delegation skills while building innovative solutions and promoting industry-standard best practices.
Graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2004, Halseth is excited to get back to his first love – music. Being involved with the performing arts from an early age, Halseth has played the trumpet, French horn, Sousaphone and guitar in various bands, orchestras and ensembles.
After college, he served as the Theater and Events Coordinator for the Apple Store in Santa Monica where he helped produce live events. In this position, he was responsible for everything from client relations to setting up sound equipment and running the mixing console. From there Halseth transitioned to film production for the last 18 years, most recently overseeing the technical infrastructure for the Virtual Art Department on Disney’s “The Mandalorian.”
Reflecting on her tenure, Weiss is assured that the current Webb Center staff and the new CEO will continue to evolve the theatre’s programming to remain relevant and vital to the community it serves. “I plan to be available to help answer questions and provide higher level training for Andy as he takes over the leadership role. I am very confident that he is the right person to pilot the organization into the future.” Weiss insists, “The Webb Center has been a community effort from the start and will continue to thrive long after my departure.” Halseth lives with his wife Jessica and their 6-month-old daughter Marigold. “Wickenburg is the first community I’ve been a part of where I believe I can contribute in a meaningful way. I’m eager to serve this community by building upon the legacy that Cathy Weiss has established,” he shared. “I’m excited to have my daughter grow up surrounded by the performing arts and everything it offers.”
Webb Center CEO Announces June 2024 Retirement
Cathy Weiss Pereira has served the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in a number of capacities since its inception in 1997. She has decided to relinquish her current role as CEO in June 2024 at the conclusion of Camp Imagination.
Weiss Pereira was one of the original community members who envisioned a state-of-the-art theatre on the new high school campus. One in which students, residents, and visitors to the greater Wickenburg area could engage in a wide variety of live, performing arts. As one of the founding board members of the not-for-profit organization, she was tasked with helping to raise funds for building construction. A donation of $1.1 million from the Del E. Webb Foundation changed the trajectory of the fledgling not-for-profit, fast-tracking the theatre’s completion and opening season in 2001.
“We had a very dedicated board of directors, including Kevin Cloe, Royce Kardinal Ferree, and Beth Gallant,” reminisces Weiss Pereira. “We hosted Sock Hops, Dog Shows, Bus Trips to Laughlin – you name it – we were very grassroots in our fundraising efforts.”
Weiss Pereira transitioned from board member to Executive Director in June 2003. Since then the organization has grown and flourished under her steady leadership. The organization’s current body of work includes presenting national and international touring artists, hosting an artist residency program, offering free student performances and producing a summer arts camp.
“My favorite time of the year is Camp Imagination,” Weiss Pereira shares. “I love watching the campers learn new theatre skills and gain the self-confidence to stand on that stage singing their hearts out for family and friends to witness. Seeing them grow, year after year, at camp is so rewarding.”
Reflecting on her tenure, Weiss Pereira is proud of what has been accomplished with the dedicated support of staff, board members and volunteers. She insists, “This has been a community effort from the start and will continue to thrive long after my departure.”
Helping find a potential applicant to take over the reins is Los Angeles-based search firm Arts Consulting Group. They will conduct a nationwide search, narrow it down to 2-3 highly qualified candidates, and bring them on site for tours and interviews. The current timeline is to have the new CEO hired by March 2024 so they have an opportunity to shadow Weiss Pereira and gain hands on training before her retirement.
Recently Weiss Pereira was recognized for her efforts in Arizona’s Arts & Culture sector with ONMedia’s Arts Hero award. She is currently a finalist for the inaugural Arizona Creative Excellence Award’s “Oonagh Award.” Named for Oonagh Boppart, an instrumental philanthropist for the Desert Botanical Garden and other cultural organizations, the award recognizes those who champion collaborative efforts among public and private sectors to advance the arts in Arizona.
Weiss Pereira is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and dogs as well as volunteering in the community and traveling in her retirement years ahead.

Crowell to open ‘23-‘24 season “Better than Ever”
On Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m., two-time Grammy Award-winner Rodney Crowell and his 4-piece band kick off the 2023-2024 Season at the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts, playing music from his latest album, “The Chicago Sessions.”
Singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell grew up in the Houston area, steeped in country music. His parents met at a Roy Acuff concert and Crowell was onlytwo years old when his father insisted on taking him to see Hank Williams perform. By age eleven, he was playing in his father’s honky-tonk band. He has been writing and playing music ever since.
His impact and influence extends beyond country music. Crowell has penned more than fifteen number one hits – including five of his own. His tracks have been recorded by everyone from John Denver and Johnny Cash to Waylon Jennings and Keith Urban.
Rodney has been nominated for 17 Grammy’s in the genres of country, folk, Americana and roots. He has taken home two Grammys for his songs “I’ll Love You Til the Day I Die” and “Old Yellow Moon.”
A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Crowell was honored with ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award in 2017, and in 2019, he was presented with the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award. In addition to his prolific output as an artist and producer, Crowell also found time to become a celebrated author – publishing a memoir and a lyrical retrospective to widespread praise.
His new release, “The Chicago Sessions,” was produced by Jeff Tweedy. The songs are vital and timely, touching on everything from love and mortality to race and religion. Reportedly, the performances are nothing short of intoxicating – fueled by raw guitars, honky-tonk piano, and tight, punchy drums.
Opening the Nov. 1 concert is native Australian guitarist Jedd Hughes. His easy tenor voice and special brand of roots-anchored rock and roll have made him one of Nashville’s most sought-after players. Hughes has collaborated with artists such as Patty Loveless, Emmylou Harris and Vince Gill, among others.

On Dec. 16, get into the holiday spirit with the enchanting sounds of Pink Martini during their “Tons of Tinsel Tour” concert. This “little orchestra” from Portland, Oregon, is celebrated for their captivating fusion of classical, jazz, and pop influences. With a combination of seasonal songs from around the world and multi-lingual fan-favorites, Pink Martini’s performance promises to be a festive evening filled with heartwarming melodies and infectious rhythms that will have audiences dancing in the aisles.
On Jan. 27, 2024, get ready for a groundbreaking union of classical music and hip-hop as Black Violin returns to the Webb Center. The captivating duo, consisting of classically trained violinist Kev Marcus and violist Wil Baptiste, shatters musical boundaries with their genre-defying performances. Paired with the soulful and empowering vocals of special guest Danielle Ponder, this promises to be an electrifying evening that defies expectations.
After 2 sold out concerts in 2022, Grammy-winning sensation The Mavericks are back by popular demand on Feb. 2 & 3. Delivering a signature blend of country, rock, and Latin influences, the band is renowned for their electrifying live performances.
