Discover the music from John Lennon’s “Lost Weekend”

The six musicians and vocalists of Live from Laurel Canyon return to the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts in Wickenburg on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. with their new concert program celebrating the unique bond between two legendary songwriters, John Lennon and Harry Nilsson.

After The Beatles’ breakup in 1973, John Lennon found himself in Los Angeles where he formed an iconic friendship with American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson. Over the course of the next 18 months, a time Lennon famously referred to as his “Lost Weekend,” the two musicians created some of the most memorable music of their careers.

This performance delves into the catalog of both artists, exploring their individual work, their musical collaborations, and the lasting impact they had on each other’s sound and songwriting. Songs featured during the concert include Lennon and The Beatles’ tune “Come Together” and Nilsson’s quirky, but very memorable song “Coconut,” among others.

Starring Phoenix Valley residents, the show is narrated and sung by Brian Chartrand with performances by Otto D’Agnolo (vocalist and guitarist), Todd Chuba (drums), Lamar Gaines (keys), Adam Armijo (electric guitar), and Mario Mendivil (bass). They expertly bring the “Lost Weekend” period to life through both music and storytelling. Chartrand’s engaging narration adds humor and context, making this show accessible and enjoyable to both longtime fans of Lennon and Nilsson and those discovering their music for the first time.

Brian Chartrand reflects on what makes the show special, “We use multimedia photographs and old videos to help bring the stories to life; making the show educational and visually compelling as well. I always hear how people listened to the songs in a different way after knowing the context in which they were written. I also think audiences appreciate how we make the songs our own. Our goal as musicians is to honor this music, not replicate it note for note.”
